Work from home is a new change for most of us and by the looks of it, it is sure to stay for many of us for a while now. As we settle in upon that idea, let us explore what are the measures one ought to take to ensure safety while we work from home.

Get the electrical connections right:

Whether you are making a makeshift place for yourself everyday, or whether you have installed your workstation at a particular area of your house, mind your wires. While plugging-in your devices, be careful to not let the chords become tripping hazards.

Do not overload: 

Make sure the power plugs, switches are the right wattage and wires are the correct gauze for your appliances. Avoid overloading outlets and extenders. Overloading causes overheating which in turn can ignite a fire.

Be conscious of multi plugs and extenders:

Multiplugs, extenders and power strips are a common cause of household fires due to a tendency to overload them. These are meant for small low wattage devices only like mobile chargers, computer peripherals etc. Heavy-duty gadgets like fans, heaters etc should never be plugged-in to these.

Keep it away from the reach of pets and children:

Wires can get pulled out and damaged by pets and children which can cause a short-circuit. This poses a risk of lethal shock or igniting a fire.

Mind your paperwork:

Paper is a flammable substance. Ensure all of your stationary is kept at a safe distance from possible areas of spark that may cause fire.

Fabric is flammable too:

Do not leave laptops and phones charging on beds or sofas, they can overheat and cause a fire. Besides, overheating damages the devices. 

Install Fire safety devices and alarms:

At home, Keep a fire extinguisher handy at all times. Install fire alarms and smoke detection systems for better safety.

Avoid Overcharging:

Charge your devices when they are not in use. Put the devices on charging after you wrap up work for the day to ensure they are fully charged for a new work day. Avoid sitting near plug points while charging the phones/ laptops. Overnight charging of devices is also not advisable.

Inspect regularly:

Be mindful of all the connections. Look out for frayed and broken wires and replace them immediately. Do not use a socket, switch or wire that is heating up. Get a trusted professional to look at all such hazards.
